Being in the Recruitment Industry, we receive a lot of Candidates applying for jobs and so many of these Candidates ask us how to improve their chances of success.

The more I am asked this question, the more I learn the reasons why so many people are not landing their dream jobs.

I have compiled a few tips on how one can improve your chances and successfully land a dream job. Master these simple tips and you are already halfway there!

Step 1 – Self-exploration

This is probably the most vital step in the process and I’m sure that it will help you in other areas of your life as well, so spend a good amount of time on this one.

Assess yourself and be brutally honest. This is the part where you will learn more about yourself. Make notes and really figure out exactly what YOU want (Not what your partner, family & friends want). Write down and identify what makes you happy, your values and ideals. Write down your skills set, all the things that you like and that you are good at. Write down the things that you are not so good at and then work at improving that too. By now you should have a good idea of WHO you are and what you are about.

Step 2 – Mastering Thyself

Once you have figured out who you are and what you want, you are now ready to master yourself. Know your story and know it well. Figure out your personal brand by stringing together your skills and past experiences in a way that makes perfect sense for your next position. Again, be honest and be real. People will always sniff out lies or those exaggerated stories, plus, when you are truthful, you don’t have to remember lies.

Step 3 – Your CV

After you have scouted for the job you would really like, TRUTHFULLY tailor your CV to align with the dream job. To stand a better chance, have your CV professionally written as it will be clearer and easier for the reader to understand. A CV is you in print and gives a good indication to the potential employer who you are. Remember this: your personal Social Media is a direct extension of your CV and most prospective employers look you up. What they see on various platforms can either promote, or negatively affect your chances. Another little tip here; don’t only rely on your CV. Create an on-line portfolio that represents you and actively add it to your various social platforms.

Step 4 – Reach out

Reach out to your connections whether it is on LinkedIn, Facebook, or by whatever means you network. If you don’t ask for what you want, you will never know. Connect with mentors, teachers and other professionals in the industry you are looking to enter.

Step 5 –

Once you get to the interview stage, don’t only focus on the money. Yes, money is good, but PASSION and ATTITUDE are everything! Most of our clients choose these two qualities above anything else. Passion is what gets you through the door, while Attitude keeps you there! Always, always, always exude that positive attitude and leave any sign of arrogance and expectancy outside. Never confuse Confidence and Arrogance. This first is a great quality, while the latter is very off-putting.

Good Luck and go land your Dream Job!!!
